SAISD Kindergarten Students Gifted Books Thanks to Community Supporters

On Wednesday, October 13th, San Angelo ISD kindergarten students were treated to a gift of their own copy of “Jack and The Beanstalk” as retold by Carol Ottolenghi compliments of San Angelo READS! community supporters: Diego’s Burritos of San Angelo and an anonymous donor. The giveaway is in support of the District’s community-wide literacy initiative, San Angelo READS!, created to inspire a love of reading and to encourage reading beyond the school walls.

“As a long-time part of the San Angelo community, Diego’s Burritos cares deeply about our city and its residents. We also know the importance of literacy seeing as we have two kids in school at SAISD,” said Diego’s Burritos Manager Manuel Diego. “Diego’s Burritos is very happy to help San Angelo READS! as they are molding our students for the future.”

In celebration of the book giveaway, SAISD Executive Director of Teaching and Learning Shelly Huddleston read the classic magical tale to a kindergarten class at Bowie Elementary that was streamed live from the District Facebook page for other SAISD classes to tune in as well as interested community members. Watch the full video of the read-aloud here. San Angelo ISD is thankful for community supporters of public education and the future of San Angelo like Diego’s Burritos and the anonymous donors, and extends our gratitude from the District and on behalf of our students. SAISD is working to provide a book to each of our elementary students this school year, and the support from community businesses, members and groups is very much appreciated.

“We are lucky to have such great community partners who have a vested interest in our students and our schools. We sincerely appreciate the many partnerships throughout our San Angelo community. We are also very thankful to have a school district who values the importance of literacy and inspiring reading for all. We love San Angelo READS!” said Bowie Elementary Principal Darius Flowers.

The San Angelo READS! community-wide literacy initiative was founded by San Angelo ISD in 2020 to promote and encourage reading and the SAISD future-ready learner profile attributes among SAISD students and the greater San Angelo community. The goal of the literacy initiative is to increase awareness of the importance of literacy and to inspire a love for reading. This exciting initiative is driven by statistics which show how vitally important literacy is to providing all students with the opportunities to succeed at a young age. Children and teenagers who read for pleasure on a daily or weekly basis score better on reading and writing tests than infrequent or non-readers.
